Does this mean I'm cool?

I've never been a coffee drink. Actually, I hate it. I've never understood why people drink it.

Then I found this blog the other day..."Like A Warm Cup of Coffee." I watched her video introducing herself, and she said something that struck me. She said she only started drinking coffee a couple of years ago, then she realized that all these years, she wasn't lazy, she was just tired! A lightbulb went off in my head, and I thought that maybe that was the solution for me, too.

But my problem is that I hate the taste.

So, I went to my favorite place - Did a search for hot chocolate and coffee in the ingredients search, and found this recipe.

Gunline Coffee

2 cups powdered non-dairy coffee creamer
1 1/2 cups instant hot chocolate mix
1 1/2 cups instant coffee granules
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1.In a large bowl, stir together the coffee creamer, hot chocolate mix, instant coffee, sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
2.To make 1 cup, spoon 2 heaping tablespoons of the mix into a coffee mug, and add 1 cup of boiling water. Stir until dissolved.

So I went to Target yesterday, got all the ingredients and made my mix (I got Italian sweet cream flavored creamer and Dulce de Leche flavored hot chocolate). It's really good! There's still a coffee flavor to it, but the sugar, chocolate and spices cover it pretty well.

So, I'm on my way to see if this experiment works. I've had my cup this morning, and I'm feeling the caffeine course through my veins as we speak.

  1. You'll TRULY be cool when you get a stack of Starbucks cups (with the cardboard hand-protector-thingy, of course) and drink your Italian-dulce-cinnameg-3-drops-of-coffee "coffee" in that.
Then, my friend, you will have arrived. :o)

  2. Sounds delicious, but way too sweet. That's a lot of sugar!!!!!!!!! You know me, I'd cut it in half automatically.

  3. Anonymous3:58 PM

Let me know if it helps! I can't stand the smell or taste of coffee either. So if sugar and other flavors help tone it down, I may have to give it a try. Meanwhile I'll get by on a diet coke or coke zero around 10am to make it through the day.

  4. i'm also a no coffee person. i've restorted to drinking coke and diet coke to give me a little boost. i might have to try this.

  5. Starbucks sells this stuff called VIA-- it's instant coffee but way better for you because they don't use any chemicals to turn the coffee beans into instant coffee. You should try that next time.

  6. The secret to good coffee is the grind and freshness of the brew. Coffee that has been sitting out too long or brewed disproportionately is gross, and I think that's why there are so many haters. The right bean ground and brewed correctly should smell and taste amazing. If you want a simpler path to cool, you should start with Trader Joe's French Roast and follow the directions on the box exactly. Add just enough cream so that it swirls up perfectly and turns the color a latte brown and one teaspoon of sugar. Oh, man I need to go make some right now!

  7. Yay for having an open mind! I hated it as well until we moved here and I got an early morning job and it was always freezing in there. The only solutions were coffee or hot chocolate and pop. I actually started with steamers. Not even coffee just steamed flavored milk. Then graduated to having a bit of coffee in a 'fru fru' coffee drink like a latte wasn't too bad. Now I can tolerate a few sips of it black but still need some agave necter to sweeten it.
Good coffee makes a huge difference. Folgers is nasty. I even think it smells bad. Starbucks always tastes burnt. You should find a local place that roast their beans on site. If you grind your own they are better and we have started using french press instead of a coffee maker.
Sorry long note, after reading it I sound like a coffee junkie but I still only drink it occasionly.

  8. Hey,

I saw the name of your blog in someone's blogroll, and it caught my eye!

Well, as a "kiwi"... a New Zealander, I wondered if this was a blogger I have not heard about from our little land of the Long White Cloud.

Therefore, the question is endemic... If you are willing, some illumination would peak my curiosity!

    Cheers ;-)

  9. I have just taken a closer look at your homepage... Your Husband's with the Air Force... "Kiwis" are flightless birds...

Is there a tongue-in-cheek play on concepts going on here?

    Curious I am!

  10. Hey Kelly, Nice to Meet You

By the way, for all those who, like me, read the comments, Kelly just left a message on my blog, therefore, one could describe this comment as the return of the king ;-)

    To answer your question...

I saw your blog title on "The Journey Is My Own" Blog, which I believe I landed on through "Jesus Needs New PR"... Ah, the wonders of social networking!

Feel free to visit again... and that goes for all of you... too!

  11. I have a friend who makes this at Christmas time and packages it in little jars and gives out as gifts. She calls it Fireside Coffee I think, but it is the same ingredients as your recipe. I have only become a coffee drinking girl in the last couple years...and using flavored creamer is what got me hooked. We like 8 o clock coffee best, and buy whole beans and grind them ourselves.
